The significance of Jesus entry

What was the significance of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem?

Jesus entry into Jerusalem was more than just an entry of triumph. It had great significance in that it would revolutionize the world when it came to bringing salvation to the world. Some key elements had to be put into its rightful place in order to receive the full impact of what Jesus brings.

He was fulfilling the prophecy according to;

Zechariah 9:9 rejoices greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Jesus just didn’t take any path into Jerusalem he would come through the main gate starting from Beth-phage the place that houses the synagogue and temple where the authority of Israel convenes.  Here is where they determine the limits of what is Holy and what was un-Holy. The High Priest would be the overseer and discern the moral and Spiritual condition of the people. This is where Jesus would proclaim to the world His sovereignty, His eminence and claim His rightful place as the righteous King.  The people who gathered got the news that Jesus was would be at the feast of the Passover and the people were making their way to see Jesus. Either because they saw the miracles that He had performed and heard and observed the authority in which He spoke or they heard about all the marvelous things that He had done and wanted to see Him.

John 12:9  Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of Him but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.   10) So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,   11) for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.

Everything was in place for King Jesus to enter in. Even His disciples that followed His instructions to the letter in retrieving the donkey. The crowd was lining the path that Jesus was entering into, laying their clothes and cutting down tree branches of palms and laying them out before Him. Coming behind Him was a crowd including his disciples shouting, “Hosanna in the highest”. Jesus was taking His rightful place as King and God Himself would audibly glorify His Son in the mist of the people according to John12: 28.

What was germane or just as important to Jesus taking His rightful place was first the cleansing of the temple. Jesus went into the temple turning over table were they sold doves and the money changers. He was showing forth complete restoration of worship. The temple is where they worshipped and honored God, but the temple was not honoring God. It was being desecrated by them before, by breach their integrity of worship.

Second, Jesus cursed the fig tree because it gave the appearance of bearing fruit but it did not. As for the Pharisees, scribes and the Priesthood; they gave the appearance of being Godly and pious.  But Jesus, in Mathews 23: 27 “ indeed appear beautiful on the outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. So what Jesus was doing in essence is never allowing Kingdom fruit to be born in the condition of uncleanness.

Jesus knew the hearts of all men and He knew the intentions of the Sanhedrin, that they were desiring to kill Him. But they would not take His life; for it would be Jesus that would lay down His life for His sheep. He also said that if you destroy the temple it will be raised again in three days and He was speaking of His body. This is the invocation in what Jesus was revealing to the world; when you kill me, you kill the temple, when you destroy me you destroy the temple . But I will be raised up to sit on the right side of my Father and will destroy all the practices of the old system.  No more animal sacrifice, the priesthood will be no more, and the word of God will be the limits of what is holy and unholy. Jesus will be our high Priest, His blood will be the sacrifice once and for all.

 

Psalm 92:12 the righteous will be like the palm in the house of the Lord , we will flourish and grow like cedar.  So lay it all down before the Lord!
